How to Care for a Dog After Leg Amputation: Recovery, Comfort and Clothing

Clothing Made for 3-Legged Dogs

Welcome to Tripawd Clothing UK — specially designed clothes that actually fit tripawd dogs.

Every piece is cut to be comfortable for 3-legged movement, easy to put on when your dog doesn't want to stand still, and soft against healing skin. Made here in the UK in sizes from tiny XXS (perfect for chihuahuas) to big greyhound and lurcher.

You can find my full collection on these pages:

Recovery Shirts — soft, breathable t-shirts for after surgery

Soft, breathable t-shirts for after surgery, ideal when you need to cover and protect without rubbing.

These shirts are:

  • Soft and breathable cotton — gentle on sensitive skin and healing areas
  • Protective without rubbing — covers stitches and wounds without irritating
  • Elasticated hem — the bottom hem is lightly elasticated so it sits close to the body and doesn't hang or drag. This is really important for 3-legged dogs, as loose fabric can trip them or get caught under their legs when they move or lie down

Easy to pull on, comfortable to wear all day, and machine washable for those messy recovery days. These can be used as everyday wear after the wound has healed.

Coats — designed as a pullover for easier dressing

Designed as a pullover-head version to make dressing easier — perfect when your dog won't stand still.

These are either:

  • Water-resistant with fleece lining
  • Cotton with quilted lining
  • Sweatshirt material with lining

Our range offers different styles from heritage to our new gothic style.

These coats have a zip on the back or on the front and are warm with a closed neck. As the zip isn't open at the collar end, they are much easier to dress.

You pull the coat over the head, put in the leg and shoulder, and close the zip. Voila!

Fleeces — cosy warmth for after recovery

Our fleeces are made for warmth and comfort once the initial recovery is over.

Soft, cosy, and easy to wear around the house or out on chilly walks. They are a little roomier than our Recovery Shirts, designed to layer over a tee or wear on their own when your dog feels the cold.

These fleeces have:

  • Warm fleece fabric — keeps them snug without being heavy or bulky
  • Soft inside and out — comfortable for all-day wear
  • No elasticated hem — cut to sit naturally, not tight to the body, as these are for everyday warmth after operation, not for covering wounds

Easy pullover style with a closed neck, just like our coats — pull over the head, put the leg in, and they are ready to go.

Hand Knitted Sweaters — my own designs, made stitch by stitch

Every sweater is hand knitted by me, to my own Tripawd designs. No two are exactly the same.

Made as 1-sleeve models — specially shaped for 3-legged dogs, with either left or right leg amputated, so there is no empty, flapping sleeve and the fit sits comfortably over the shoulder.

I knit in a range of yarns depending on what the sweater will be used for:

  • Chunky acrylic and normal acrylic — hard-wearing, easy to wash, great for everyday warmth
  • Wool, merino, alpaca or cotton — natural fibres for extra warmth, softness or breathability, chosen for the season and your dog's needs

From cosy chunky knits for cold winter walks to lighter cotton and merino blends for spring.

All handmade to order in the UK, from XXS to greyhound sizes — just let me know if your tripawd is missing the left or right leg when you order.

PJs and All-in-Ones — snug cotton jersey pyjamas

Cosy pyjamas for a good night's sleep — soft, breathable and made to stay on.

Currently my selection is mainly for dachshunds, as in the photo, but I will be making more for other sizes too.

These PJs are:

  • Mainly cotton jersey — soft against the skin, stretchy for comfort, and breathable for overnight wear
  • Full coverage — with legs, to keep them warm on chilly nights and to stop draughts for dogs who feel the cold
  • Snug but not tight — designed to stay in place while they curl up and sleep, without riding up or twisting

Like this mint and pink floral pair with the little frill collar — sweet for bedtime, but practical too. Easy pullover style, machine washable, and handmade to order in the UK.

More sizes and prints coming soon.

Dresses — from XXS to Greyhound

Pretty dresses for special days — handmade to make them feel special too.

I can make dresses from tiny XXS up to big greyhound and lurcher sizes, all cut to fit comfortably whether they have 3 or 4 legs.

These dresses are:

  • Made for occasions — weddings, birthdays, photoshoots or just because they deserve a pretty dress
  • Comfortable to wear — soft jersey or woven bodice with a full lining, so nothing itches or rubs
  • Easy pullover style — with a closed, high neck like my coats, so it stays put and is easier to dress

Like this houndstooth dress with black tulle tutu — elegant for a wedding, but still practical with sleeves that stay in place and a skirt that doesn't trip them.

From classic heritage checks to floral and party tulle.

Rainsuits — water-resistant suits for rainy walks [Prototype Phase]

Our new 3-legged rainsuits — currently in prototype phase — designed to keep them drier on wet walks without tangling legs.

Like this orange and black suit, they are cut for 3-legged movement so there is no empty sleeve to flap or catch.

These rainsuits are:

  • Water-resistant, not fully waterproof — made from water-resistant fabric and lined for comfort, but please note they have seams so they are not 100% waterproof in heavy, prolonged rain
  • Lined — for warmth and to stop the outer fabric sticking to their coat
  • 3-legged cut — made specifically for left or right leg amputees, so the suit sits close and doesn't drag or trip them
  • Easy pullover style — with a closed neck and secure fit, easier to dress when they won't stand still in the hallway

Still in development — I'm testing fabrics and seam finishes to make them as water-resistant as possible while keeping them breathable and comfortable.
